Since 1956, Scottsdale Stadium has been a vibrant social and cultural hub of Old Town, welcoming fans from all over the world to exciting games and events. Since opening in 1956, Scottsdale Stadium has become a cherished landmark in the heart of Old Town, known for its pivotal role in the Cactus League. Hosting legendary teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs, it has witnessed countless unforgettable moments in baseball history.

In 1984, the San Francisco Giants made the stadium their spring training home, further solidifying its status as a must-visit destination for fans and players alike. A major renovation in 1992, designed by the architects behind Camden Yards, seamlessly blended modern upgrades with the stadium’s classic charm.

Continued enhancements, including the 2005 update, have added exciting features such as a new centerfield entrance, expanded team facilities, batting tunnels, the Charro Pavilion, and additional practice fields. The stadium also proudly showcases historic elements like sidewalk bricks shaped like home plates, turn-of-the-century lamps, and framed antique baseball gloves. These improvements have helped maintain the stadium’s reputation as a premier spring training venue and a beloved gathering spot for baseball fans and the Scottsdale community.

THE STADIUM OVER THE YEARS

1956

Scottsdale Stadium Opens

The original stadium is constructed at the corner of Osborn Road and Drinkwater Boulevard. The Baltimore Orioles become the first team to hold their spring training at the stadium, marking Scottsdale’s entry into the Cactus League.

1959

Red Sox Spring In

The Boston Red Sox begin their spring training tenure, continuing through 1965.

1967

Cubs Take the Field

The Chicago Cubs take over spring training at the stadium, remaining until 1978.

1979

A's Make It Home

The Oakland Athletics utilize the stadium for spring training from 1979 to 1981.

1984

Giants Era Begins

The San Francisco Giants establish the stadium as their spring training home, a partnership that continues to this day.
